It is no secret that Google is the largest search engine on the internet. Yet the full extent of Google’s internet domination is easy to underestimate. According to Visual Capitalist, Google’s various search platforms are responsible for over 90% of all internet searches. By comparison, Yahoo, Amazon, Bing, Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter comprise just 9.2% of search traffic combined.

Google’s 90.8% of internet searches break down as follows:
Search Platform | % of Searches |
62.60% | |
Google (image) | 22.60% |
YouTube | 4.30% |
Google Maps | 1.30% |
Google Total | 90.80% |

If one adds Google’s other services like Gmail, Google Plus, Google Drive, etc…, its domination of the internet is even greater.

In light of the massive trove of data that Google keeps on everyone and amid increasing allegations that tech giants like Google are placing their fingers on political scales around the world, Google risks crossing the line from a gateway to the internet to a gatekeeper to the internet. Fortunately, it is just as easy to type DuckDuckGo.com (or any other search engine) into a browser as it is to type Google.com.
