The following two maps, by Youtube cartographer ‘Ollie Bye,’ show the populations of the five largest cities in the world from 3,000 BC until 2017 and projections for the top five until 2100 AD. Somewhat remarkably, since New York City fell out of the rankings 1992, no western city is ranked in the top five most populous, nor is one expected to be ranked as far out as the year 2100. If those projections are correct, the period from 1992 until 2100 will be the longest period since 200 BC when neither Europe nor the US are home to one of the world’s largest cities.
