Despite its massive trade deficit, the US managed to export $2.3 trillion of goods in 2017. In order to better understand what comprised that $2.3 trillion and where it came from, the following chart from Visual Capitalist reveals the top export of every state in the Union.

As the following table details, the largest exporting state is Washington. It exported $41.8 billion in 2017, almost double the number two state, Texas. As Visual Capitalist notes, Washington’s top spot is no doubt due to Boeing’s factory in Everett, WA – “the largest building in the world by volume.” Despite boasting the largest economy and population in the US, California is only the 6th largest exporter, behind Kentucky. Airplanes dominate the list with six of the top ten exporting states listing airplanes as their single largest international export. At the other end of the spectrum Rhode Island ($187 million), Montana ($209 million), and Maine ($326 million) are the smallest exporters in the country. Their top exports are iron and steel waste, tobacco, and lobsters respectively.
