The following chart, from Statista, shows the changes in the number of active duty US military personnel stationed in various overseas bases in 2018. From the look of it, the US ‘pivot’ to Asia is alive and well.

The countries that saw the largest increase in US military personnel were Guam (+48%), Japan (+28%), and South Korea (+12%). Guam is a US territory. Meanwhile, Germany (+1%), Italy (+4%), and the UK (+0%) saw little change and the Middle-East states Kuwait (-12%) and Bahrain (-39%) saw large reductions in US troop levels. Spain also saw a 14% reduction.

While it is only a very narrow snapshot, perhaps the US military focus on the Middle-East is finally waning, ever so slightly.
