The following graphic, from Visual Capitalist, shows the timing and death toll for most major pandemics in recorded history. These include the Antonine Plague from 165 to 180 AD which is often viewed as a major turning point in the Roman Empire, the Plague of Justinian from 541 AD through 542 AD which doomed the Eastern Roman Empire’s campaign to retake Italy, the Black Death which transformed Medieval Europe, as well as more modern pandemics such as Small Pox, HIV/AIDS, and the Spanish Flu.
