The arch is the largest and last surviving triumphal Roman arch. It was dedicated in 315 AD, though may have simply been a retooling of an arch originally been built during the time of Hadrian, perhaps even prior. It now commemorates Constantine’s victory over Maxentius during the Civil Wars of the Tetrarchy. Granting a triumphal arch for victory against fellow Romans during a civil war was once unthinkable in Rome but by Constantine’s era few cared much about such niceties.
