The world around us is rapidly changing and Hong Kong’s Jummy Lai knows this better than most. Once a poor immigrant to Hong Kong, Jimmy Lai founded the pro-democracy Apple Daily news paper in Hong Kong, becoming a leading voice for freedom in the city and a billionaire in the process. For that very reason, Jimmy Lai has now become the highest profile victim of China’s new ‘National Security Law,’ recently imposed on Hong Kong and reversing many of its basic freedoms.
Out on bail for participating in pro-democracy protests and perhaps looking at spending the rest of his life in prison, Jimmy Lai recently spoke with the Hoover Institute about China’s crack down on Hong Kong and the need for Europe and other Western countries to join with the US in confronting China’s totalitarian drive and not giving up on a free Hong Kong.
