While the US trade deficit continues to widen to record levels, there is a sliver of good news. US liquified natural gas exports (LNG) continue to hit fresh records, as the following chart from the EIA highlights.
Despite the ban on new natural gas drilling permits on federal lands and the full court press to stop the construction of natural gas pipelines and infrastructure across the US (though apparently not in Germany), global demand for natural gas remains high as the fuel has proven to be a cheap and flexible way for countries to replace much dirtier coal powered electricity generation or oil home heating and reduce emissions while growing overall energy generation capacity.
That has led to record US LNG exports to countries like India and Brazil, and record pipeline exports to Mexico. Time will tell how long that can continue in light of the growing restrictions on the industry.
