Outgoing President of France and socialist François Hollande is the least popular French president since the first French election in 1848. Central among the many grievances against Hollande has been the faltering French economy and persistently high unemployment rate. In recognition of this, Hollande said in 2015 that he would only seek re-election if he succeeded in lowering the unemployment rate.

True to his word, he declined to seek re-election.
Instead, Hollande’s Deputy Secretary-General from 2012 to 2014 and Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry until 2016, Emmanuel Macron, ran and won the election this past Sunday. Given the alternative, the EU is celebrating the result. With triumphs like these, who needs defeats (-Pyrrhus).
