China has wasted no time since the passage of its thinly veiled Hong Kong ‘National Security’ law in late June. Numerous journalists and democracy advocates have been arrested, including the billionaire owner of the widely read Apple Daily. Books have been banned from libraries and the Chinese are now seeking to arrest exiled Hong Kongers and dual citizens living abroad, confirming the farce of China’s ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy for Hong Kong.
David Roche, Independent Strategy President and Hong Kong resident, recently spoke with CNBC about the situation, noting that the price China will pay for its blatant dissolution of Hong Kong’s cherished freedoms will be any notion that democratic Taiwan will ever willingly accept China’s ‘One Country, Two Systems.’
Some excerpts from David Roche:
“I think Taiwan is the next domino not to go and there are two reasons for that. What has happened in Hong Kong has lost Taiwan for China forever. The idea of having ‘One Country, Two Systems’ for Taiwan has now been made anathema for the Taiwanese people… So in a sense, the big price China is paying for Hong Kong is actually Taiwan.”
“Now, will China really carry out its threat to achieve the reunification with Taiwan by military means? I doubt it very much because, despite the non-existence of a formal treaty between the US and Taiwan… for the defense of Taiwan by America… if there was any such move by China militarily against Taiwan, the US would most definitely act.”
There is more to the interview, so enjoy it above.
