The following photo was taken by Roger Fenton on April 23, 1855 during the Crimean War and was titled “Valley of the Shadow of Death.” It shows a landscape in Sevastopol, Crimea which is littered with cannon balls fired at the English forces who were defending the area. It is considered the very first significant war photo.
There are two versions of the photo, one with cannon balls on the road and one without. It is not known which photo was taken first and debates rage to this day as to whether the cannonballs were placed on the road for effect, or whether the cannon balls were removed from the road by the soldiers so that they could be reused.
