Leland Miller, the man who runs the largest private in-country data-collection network in China – China Beige Book International recently spoke with Blockworks Marco in a wide ranging interview about China.
The long running interview doesn’t lend itself to excerpts but Mr. Miller’s main points are: China is facing a long term “precipitous” growth slowdown, China’s ‘Covid-Zero’ lockdowns are creating “catastrophic” problems from the Chinese economy, Xi Jinping will likely serve as leader of China for life, there is no going back to a business friendly environment, and the risk of a Chinese invasion or blockade of Taiwan are going up. Summing it up by recapping China’s rapidly shrinking and aging demographics he notes that unlike Japan which “got rich before it got old” China “got old before it got rich.”
