The following infographic, from Visual Capitalist, shows every major milestone in US market-cap history from 1781, when the Bank of North America became the first million dollar company in the US, to today with Apple becoming the first trillion dollar company.

As Visual Capitalist notes, Apple is technically not the first $1 trillion company in the world. That title goes to the Chinese energy company PetrocChina, which briefly surged to a market cap over $1 trillion dollars before collapsing to around $200 billion.
