As we first discussed here, China has become the largest producer and consumer of automobiles in the world. As Statista notes:
“In 2016, there were 28 million new registrations (in China) – this compares to 21.5 million in the USA, Canada, and Mexico combined. As we’ve covered before, a substantial share of the market is covered by Chinese companies, most of which are completely unknown in the West.”
Which begs the question:
What are the most popular automobile brands in China?
The infographic below, via Statista, reveals the answer, which may come as a surprise to some American readers. While the most popular brand in China is Volkswagen with nearly three million units sold in 2016, the second most popular car brand in China is… Buick with over one million units sold. Third place was claimed by Chinese state-owned brand Changan with just over one million units sold.
While Buick has struggled in the US with a ‘Bingo night’ image appealing mostly to ageing buyers, things are different in China where, according to Business Insider, it is a popular car among business people and a top luxury brand.
