Current US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson recently gave a speech and Q&A at the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) on the subject of enhancing US India relations in Asia and the Indo-Pacific. In a major thrust of the speech, Secretary Tillerson emphasizes his desire to enhance, in co-operation with India, ‘alternative financing options’ for developing countries in the Indo-Pacific region in order to counter growing Chinese influence and what he describes as ‘predatory’ financing, a subject we recently discussed in depth here. Secretary Tillerson also signifies that the US is formally elevating its relationship with India:
“…designating India as a major defense partner and Congress’s affirmation of that. I think as everyone appreciates, the US have the finest fighting military force on the planet first because of the quality of the men and women in uniform, all volunteer force, but they are also equipped with the greatest technologies and weapon systems that are unmatched by anyone else in the world. So that’s an enormous advantage to our military strength. So we don’t provide that (technology) lightly and that is why we have such rigorous review mechanisms when we get into technology transfer. But having said that, our most important allies and partners have access to that and India has been elevated to that level.”
