While the largest city in the US at the time of the American Revolution was Philadelphia, by the time that the first official US census was completed in 1790, New York City had become the largest city in the country with a population of just 33,131 people. It has retained the title ever since.
In 1790, the most populous cities in the US were: NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, Charleston, Baltimore, Northern Liberties Township in Pennsylvania, Salem, Newport, Providence, and Marblehead in Massachusetts.
Today the largest cities in the US are: NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, and San Jose.
