The punchline is that, while housing costs (mortgages) are taking the largest slice of household income since the early 1990s, that amount is still considerably less than it was in the 1970s and 1980s. Of course, as mortgages continue to roll into today’s higher rates, the average mortgage burden is likely to keep climbing higher. So while things could be worse, they likely will be.
Of note, spare cash is not so much ‘spare’ as ‘all other expenses,’ e.g. education, healthcare, phone, etc…
