Garry Kasparov was the last Soviet chess player to win the Chess World Championship, taking the title in 1985 at the record young age of 22. He retained the title until 2000, cementing his place as the greatest living chess champion, and retired as the number one ranked player in the world in 2005.
He also became a leading advocate for democracy in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union and has been a staunch critic of Russia’s Vladimir Putin. He recently spoke with Reason in a wide ranging interview about his experiences in the twilight of the Soviet Union, socialism, Putin, and the concerns about the ‘dismantling’ of America.
While one may not agree with Mr. Kasparov on many points, his perspective is an interesting one. Enjoy the wide ranging interview below.
