A couple things that struck me about the graphic are:
- How few times America’s neighbors make the list. By my count, July 1997 was the last time Mexico took the top spot and June 1910 was the last time for Canada.
- Roughly speaking, China has become the most frequent multi-year focus in the New York Times since around 2009, ominously taking the title from Iraq, who took it from Russia, who took it from Vietnam, and Russia again before that.
- The US used to be very very focused on the UK
