Sergei Kan, who was born in the Soviet Union and immigrated to the US at 21 in 1974 and is now a Dartmouth Professor, recently sat down with Uncommon Knowledge’s Peter Robinson to discuss the Soviet Gulag system, it’s horrors, and, at the very end of the discussion, to issue a warning about the ‘woke’ movement he sees in the US.
About whether the woke movement is heading towards Soviet-esque authoritarianism he notes:
“I don’t (think it will ultimately lead to that), but there are Russian immigrants, including some very close to me, that think we are going in that direction. Political correctness, students afraid to speak their mind because they’ll be branded conservative, or right-wing, or racist, or whatever, a kind of hounding people on campus before they’ve even been tried in the court of law. Presumption of innocence doesn’t seem to be present, but I must say I believe in America. I love the country… I think there is a healthy core that will carry us through, but we are hitting some rough bumps and it’s disappointing and it is scary.”
