As part of our ongoing series of historical video-maps, we present: ‘The History of Communism Every Year Since 1850’ from YouTube creator Formosa. Beginning with the Taiping Rebellion in 1850 and running until present day, the following video captures the adoption and subsequent abandonment of the various manifestations of communism, socialism, and anachro-communisim around the world. In today’s post Soviet world, it is easy to forget just how ominous the specter of communism was in the late 1970s and 80s. At its peak around 1980, communism and its various offshoots had spread across a substantial percentage of the world’s landmass and population, having established itself in Eastern Europe, Russia, most of Asia, most of northern Africa, and much of southern Africa. Coincidentally or not, the Soviet Union’s defeat in the Soviet Afghan War marked the high water mark for communism, which was followed by a quick collapse not just of the Soviet Union but many of its client states.
