As part of our ongoing series of historical video-maps, we present ‘The Rise and Fall of the Hapsburg Dynasty’ by YouTube creator Paul Riet. Beginning in 1282, shortly after Rudolf of Hapsburg became King of Germany and Ruler of Austria, the map traces the complicated evolution of the Hapsburg Dynasty. The Hapsburg Dynasty was a bloodline of rulers who, mostly through intermarriages and diplomacy, came to dominate the Holy Roman Empire, the Duchy of Burgundy, and the Spanish Empire for hundreds of years. While the direct bloodline had died out by 1780, related bloodlines who ruled the Austrian and later Austria-Hungarian Empires continued to use the name until their defeat and final disbandment at the end of World War I.
