As part of our ongoing series of historical video-maps, we present ‘The Rise and Fall of the Huns’ by YouTube creator Jake Mapping. Beginning in 360 AD, soon after the first written records of the Hunnic Empire emerge, the following video details the rapid conquests of the Huns during the final period of the Western Roman Empire. While Attila the Hun, the so-called ‘Scourge of God,’ is the most famous Hun leader, he was actually one of the last in a string of successful rulers that conquered much of Central Europe, The Huns were initially an ally of the Western Roman Empire, while simultaneously sacking Eastern Roman cities. Eventually, under the leadership of Attila, the Huns turned against the Western Roman Empire. They were defeated by a coalition of the Western Roman Empire and their barbarian allies at the Battle of Catalaunian Plains and more decisively by Germanic tribes at the Battle of Nedao. While the Huns greatly accelerated the collapse of the Roman Empire, they were themselves defeated a few years before the last Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was deposed.
