Map of the Day: The Rise and Fall of the Japanese Empire

Submitted by Taps Coogan on the 27th of December 2018 to The Sounding Line.

As part of our ongoing series of historical video-maps, we present ‘The Rise and Fall of the Japanese Empire’ by YouTube creator Formosa. Beginning in February 1868 with the ascension of Japan’s 122nd Emperor, Meiji the Great, the following video details the changing borders of the Japanese Empire every month until the end of World War II. Emperor Meiji transformed the Japan from an isolated feudal society into a rapidly expanding industrial empire. A series of mostly successfully conflicts, including First Sino-Japanese War, the Boxer Rebellion, the Russo-Japanese War, and World War I greatly expanded Japan’s territorial claims leading up to the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. Massive gains during WWII led Japan’s territorial claims to reach their peak shortly after attacking the United States at Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941. Japan’s defeat in WWII ended the Japanese Empire and nearly all of its territorial claims reverted to their original borders.
