As part of our ongoing series of historical video-maps, we present ‘The Five Largest Cities in Europe Every Year Since 1200 AD’ by YouTube creator Ollie Bye.

The following map shows the five largest cities in Europe, their population, and their language family, every year since 1200 AD. In the year 1200 AD, the largest cities were: Constantinople (189,000 people), Paris (160,000 people), Sevile (150,000), Palermo (135,000), and Venice (74,000). At various points in time, the following cities have all made it into the top five: Granada, Prague, Milan, Naples, London, Lisbon, Moscow, Berlin, Madrid, and Rome.

Today the five most populous cities are: Istanbul/Constantinople (14.9 million), Moscow (12.7 million), Paris (10.9 million), London (10.7 million), and Madrid (6.5 million).
