As part of our ongoing series featuring historical video-maps, we present the ‘The Exploration of the World,’ by YouTube creator Costas Melas.
The following map shows the European exploration and discovery of the World, beginning at the dawn of the Classical Greek Age in 500 BC. It continues until the present day and reveals how surprisingly long it took for Western explorers to reach northern North America, the poles, the Amazon and Congo rainforests, and South East Asia. Today, only the depths of the oceans remain largely unexplored and unmapped.
Per a user comment below, it’s worth noting that this video is based on historical maps, so while there may have been East-West trade during antiquity, the Romans didn’t have maps of China and were unaware of it’s geography. Enjoy:

The Romans traded with China. The Russians are at least European, so I guess this is a map of the exploration of the world by Basques or something.
I believe the map is based on maps throughout history, so while there was trade between East and West going back to classical times etc.., it wasn’t explored in a way that resulted in the Romans having any idea what China looked like or having maps of it
